Neurotransmitters and Biogenic Amines

WEB Anubhav Amin MD is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University. His research focuses on the role of neurotransmitters in neurological disorders. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow neurons to communicate with each other. One class of neurotransmitters is known as biogenic amines.

Biogenic Amines

Biogenic amines are amine-containing biogenic substances such as catecholamines, serotonin, and histamine. They are synthesized from amino acids and play a variety of roles in the body, including regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. Catecholamines, such as dopamine and norepinephrine, are important for attention, motivation, and movement. Serotonin is involved in mood regulation and sleep. Histamine is involved in allergic reactions and inflammation.

Dysregulation of biogenic amines has been linked to a number of neurological disorders, including depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Research into the role of biogenic amines in these disorders may lead to new treatments for these conditions.
